Been working the past two evenings on a major revision to the bassbook. The current version (5.0) has been out for two years now. I've made nips and tucks here and there, but I haven't added much to it, until now. Version 6.0 is going to have audio versions of each example. I recorded a few chapters worth last night and I've been working on ways to link them in today (so as not to clutter up the design). So, I don't know what new topics, if any, I'll be adding, but I will be adding some value to it.
A nice reflection on the art and science of software design.
With these people in charge of educating the nation's youth, it's no wonder we're in trouble (via dangerousmeta).
Ctrl-Alt-Delete: now you know who to blame.

If you're in the mood to gripe at someone, and you're lacking a target, talk to the folks at PopScripts, whose listing for showlister still shows it in the Perl category, despite several emails from me pointing out that it's a PHP script.

The last thing I wanted to do tonight was chase down javascript errors, but I did anyway.
Stupid fun from blogdex: create your own visited states map. I seem to have neglected the northwest:
Speaking of geography: Want to get away from the big city? Like to hunt, fish, or hike? Have $350K burning a hole in your pocket? Buy my dad's farm, just outside of Huntsville, Arkansas. Or, reccomend a realtor who might do a better job than these folks have done in marketing it.

Dorgem + your webcam lets you take pictures on demand or automatically at a chosen interval and store them as a local file or ftp them to a web server (yep, that's my ugly mug).
Version .03b of showlister has left the building. This is a minor bug fix/feature enhancement. Been getting a lot of emails about showlister this week. Its popularity continues to grow.
garret is now using wordpress to maintain his blog. We're jealous.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I've been grooving on Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2 for the past few days. It stays in heavy rotation on itunes on my Windows box at work. It's quietly soothing in the same way that an air conditioner humming away in the background can be, without being distracting in any way. In the car, I've been enjoying a great Muddy Water's album (The Lost Tapes) that I nabbed from the local public library. The Lost Tapes draws from two concert recordings from the same tour in the early 1970s that really showcases how talented Muddy and his band were at putting on a live show. It's a really engaging recording, and it's cool to compare the songs here with earlier recorded versions (like those collected on The Real Folk Blues).

There was a smart piece in USA Today about for-pay download music services, mostly comparing the business models of itunes music store to that of magnatune.com.
I didn't know that apache.org had named a project after me (and every other "james" in the world, I guess). But it's cool nonetheless. Update: I set up AutoIndex PHP Script for a side project of mine last night. That script just keeps getting better and better. All it really needs now is a thumbnailing option so you could use it for image galleries.

I've been exploring the content section at createivecommons.org. There's a lot of good stuff to find, and I've only scratched the surface, I'm sure. One real find is openphoto.net, which has tons of great stuff and only requires attribution for use (commercial or non-commercial). The shots in the autumn gallery remind me of where I used to live.

The latest from Google News about Spalding Gray. At this point, still missing. Since I first read about it on Garret's site, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it (and reloading the above link to see if there's any change).
There's plenty to tell but no time to tell it. I'm learning lots of new things right now and skilling up on things I need to know better. More on that latter, I'm sure.
Our friend sjarvis posts something new after a long hiatus.

I've been enjoying multiDesk, which gives you multiple (virtual) desktops--linux/unix style--on your windows box.

Okay, I've only made it through the first 37, so far, but there are plenty of good ideas in Wired's list of way to save the internet. And, the Google Zeitgeist is always worth a read.
