Going to Carolina in my Mind :: Actually, I'm going there in mind, body, and spirit. I'm moving to Charleston, South Carolina this week. I'll be living in the lovely town of Mt. Pleasant. Posting will be hit and miss through the Thanksgiving holiday. If the man saw fit to give you a few days off, I hope you enjoy them. The next time I post, I'll be wearing seersucker and sipping a mint julep.

Who was Lee Harvey Oswald? Fascinating portrayal of Oswald's strange, pathetic life.

I updated the cygwin install on my home machine, so I have tons of new linux command-line goodies to play with. I also noticed that the default X windows server is now rootless! So X apps pop up in their own windows w/o a container window. (The docs call this way of displaying "multiwindow": "an integrated Windows-based window manager").
I'm still trying to see if I like this or not, as I usually use Windowmaker (homepage | cygwin version).

This piece on the not so fine art of skimming is the funniest thing I've read in a while. (Thanks to Garret at dangerousmeta, who links so many great things).

Tons of shockwave games for your next coffee break. It's a German site (I think). There's also an English version, but it doesn't have that cool rollover trick that's on the German one.

Not yet tested, but something to check out soon: DotPHP web components (something like Visual Studio for PHP?), snif (php-driven directory auto-indexing), and pitacard (XML-driven flash card program). Also, via sjarvis, an introduction to doing SOAP-based web services in PHP (using the Amazon.com API as an example).

I don't like Roger Ebert. I think I can safely say I've never liked him. Part of it is that he panned Stardust Memories, a film I always liked. But part of it isn't his fault. When I was studying to be a literary critic (I prefer "literary historian" actually), I found out that, to most people, the term 'critic' invokes Roger Ebert. The sort of criticism I was studying had nothing to do with "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" judgements of over-all worth. It had to do with really tricky negotiations between text and context, this discourse and that one. It was pointy-headed stuff. But, be all that as it may, instapundit links this movie review in which Ebert makes a very shrewd point about the whole "violent movies = violent behavior" equation that rears its ugly head from time to time.

Thanks to sjarvis for sending me this link which shows you how to run IE 5.01, 5.5, and 6.0 on the same Windows (2000 or XP) box. Great help for testing your sites.
With all the hype about people getting fired for things they say online, this guide to internet anonymity from the register might be good reading.

How to set up a ssh server on Windows with cygwin.I'll let you know if it works. Works like a champ! (And it's a lot easier than you might think).
Ryan Adams's album, Gold is the best 70s rock album to come out in 2001. He artfully combines elemets from most every significant artist of the era into a great work that's far more than the sum of its parts.

Page's wedding was nice. No pics yet. Sorry. The event was in Little Rock, at Trapnall Hall. Since I was in LR, I also got the chance to have a coffee at the Rivermarket with my friend, Benny.
Firebird .7 for Mac OS X rocks. I haven't upgraded on my Win2K box yet, but I will. My OS X friends often complain that Mozilla is too slow on OS X, but Firebird blazes.
