Last night, the master boot record of my Windows 2000 install became corrupted. Of course, the OS didn't have the good sense to tell me this. I had to figure it out by myself. But repairing it was easy enough. You just boot from with Win2K CD, launch the "recovery console" [just a DOS prompt, really] and run fixmbr.exe. I guess I got lucky, as that's all it took to make my drive bootable again. So the new rule is this: backups to CD every Sunday and more often if I'm working on something critical. I'd been a bad boy this time. I'd have lost two months worth of work if I hadn't been able to boot back up.
I've decided to wait until the end of this month to switch from blogger to b2. That way, I won't have to mess with a partial month archive. So, wish me luck. And if you don't hear from me soon after March 1st, you'll now I either got busy with my "real" life or I screwed something up.
If I were starting a new blog from scratch, I might try texttpatern. I downloaded it and played around a bit, but I think b2 suits my needs better. But those were the two contenders. MT is also cool, but it's done in Perl and I prefer something in PHP/MySQL so I can really hack on it if need be.

If you like old time radio but don't have broadband, you can get mp3 CDs of most everything from otrcat.com. If you do have broadband, check out knotted note radio (I've mentioned this site before, but it's worth repeating). I'm fairly obsessed with Suspsense, The Whistler, and Michael Shayne at the moment.
Home computing and programming all started for me with the Atari 400 (1.79 mhz!), the first computer I ever owned. Here's the guide to atari BASIC that I remember reading as a kid. Later on, at our under-funded public school, I remember working on TRS-80 Model III's that we called "Trash 80s" for short (there was no love lost between me and the TRS-80). If you have a java-capable browser, you can try your hand at the TRS-80 through this online-emulator. You can also download an Atari 800 emulator (the 800 was the 400's big brother, but the OS was the same).

I downloaded b2 this weekend to see if I might want to finally make the switch from blogger. I've been tweaking up the templates. If I do switch, I'll gain a few useful features: rss feeds, permalinks, etc. The one thing I don't like about b2 is that all the pages are generated live from the database. But I could hack that in if I wanted it badly enough. Switching isn't a priority right now, so it might take a few weekends.

I didn't realize that Jeremy Allaire (the guy who pioneered ColdFusion) had a blog.

I've been interested recently in ways the web can be used to annotate texts. Pepysdiary.com takes a simple and elegant approach to the famous diary of Samuel Pepys. Even with the dissapointing outcome of the recent copyright extension debate, there are many etexts out there but most are in ASCII or are webified by well-intentioned people with little understanding of design. It's refreshing when I run across one as well done as this. I'll post others as I find them. Seems like this would be a good type of side-project for anyone who loves literature and the web.
(Gyford.com the pepysdiary.com author's personal site, is also worth a look, as is his Byliner app--especially the charts section--which lead me to this and this).
I happened to glance through the obituaries as I was reading the paper this morning and was saddened to learn that the kid who sold me a Dr. Pepper at the gas station earlier this week died in a car crash last night. I didn't know him. Seemed like a nice kid. Only 19 years old. Ran his truck off the road driving a little too fast on wet pavement. That's just not fair.

Running a PHP-Nuke site? Better nab the latest security fix. A bad exploitable security hole was found yesterday (thanks steve).

I hate it when a company sends me a promotion that's designed to look like a billing statement. And what a great deal they've got: they'll register one of my sites with "the major search engines" (which they define as google, aol, msn, ask jeeves, and yahoo. That's right: just those five) for the low, low price of $69.95/year. What a wonderful 'service'. Just to see what I'm missing, I decided to check out 'the tares' on each of those search sites.
