Lesson Two (posted 6/25/05)
The second of the five patterns of the G Natural Minor scale is pictured
below. We are also including the first pattern here so you can see the
overlap between the two. As in Lesson One, the first diagram shows
the scale intervals of each note:
In the second diagram, we can see the note names for each degree of the
scale:
Homework
Play pattern two up and down until it becomes familiar to you. Play
along with a metronome at a slow to medium tempo. Focus on playing well
rather than playing fast (speed will come with time).
After you have pattern two down, start picking out small groups of notes
at random. When you find patterns you like, repeat them until you have
memorized them. These will be your pattern two licks.
After you are familiar with pattern two, try finding runs that begin in
one pattern and end in the other. For instance, fine a run that starts
in pattern one but then shifts to pattern two. Or, find a run in pattern
two that ends in pattern one. Become familiar with shifting between the
two patterns so that it becomes second nature to you.
That's all for now. Lesson three will arrive very soon. So get to work!
