Wheat's Guitar Scales

The A Minor Pentatonic Scale

Patterns I and II fit together seamlessly and create one of the most useful pathways for moving up the neck. Connecting these two positions helps you break out of the boxed-in feel of Pattern I and introduces fluid, lateral movement across the fretboard.

Pattern 1 + Pattern 2

Fingering

"Boxes"--as these four-fret scale patterns are sometimes called--can be both liberating and limiting. Learning to move not just across the neck but up and down its length is a sign of maturity.

You already know to play Pattern 1 in Position 5 (i.e., frets 5-8) and Pattern 2 in 7th Position (i.e., 7-10). The trick to playing across both is to find useful places to slide between those two positions. I'd suggest, at first, doing this even when it would be easier to stay in one position.

Connections

The obvious points of connection here are Pattern 1 and Pattern 2. For a similar treatment of sliding between patterns, see Pattern 1 + Pattern 5 (Low).
